Just some recent thoughts
The struggle of finding time to write is one I think every writer faces, except maybe for Brandon Sanderson, but we can’t all be him.
But really, unless you are one of the lucky few who has made writing your full time job finding time is hard, but it’s not only finding the time, it’s wanting to write when that time comes.
Somehow, at least for me, writing is simultaneously one of my favorite things to do and one of the things I’m best at procrastinating. I’ve never really been one to make all the jokes writers love to make about hating writing, mostly because the power of suggestion works wonders on me.
And yet lately as life has gotten more busy and I’ve had to face the woes of becoming an adult, the reality of sitting down in the few moments I have to write and then wanting to be anywhere else has been exceedingly frustrating.
Now of course, I’ve heard all the advice about pushing through it anyway, and I listen, and sometimes I have a good writing session. But still, when the time comes to write again I end up procrastinating once more.
All this to say, I have well passed the honeymoon stage of writing, and as I start thinking about publishing, writing has been taken out of my whimsical world and set into the physical. I find myself either missing those early days, or dreaming of the day I’ll finally published something.
But neither of those thoughts help me now, as much as I miss the joy of discovering writing in the early days, I wouldn’t really want to go back and give up all the experience and knowledge I have gained the past 6 years. And I’m also sure in the future when I have published I will wish for the days when my writing was all my own, and no doubt will think of all the time I had to write now. Because really, I do have plenty of time if I chose to prioritize it.
My current season of writing consists of something I like to call ‘knowing just enough to realize how little I know.’ I have been all too aware of my writing flaws, but I would like to do as Weston Ludivico would do and bring some obnoxious optimism into the mix.
I get to see the flaws now, so I know what to fix, and in learning how to fix those things, I get to grow more. Even if writing isn’t always fun and happy for me, I always come back to it. So I will continue down the desert path. (If you haven’t read 100 Days of Sunlight, you should:)
When I first got the idea to write these blogs, my first thought was that they would be a lot more consistent than they’ve been, but I’ve just talked about my procrastination problem so I’ll ask for some grace in that department. But secondly, I thought they’d be a bit more informative. I’ve since learned I don’t know enough to do that.
So instead, I think I’ll stick to simple sharing my experiences and giving writing updates. So… as for my current progress update, I have just started drafting draft three of Project Folklore, So far all I’ve done is rewrite the prologue three times. But I’m proud of it which is something I haven’t been able to say for quite some time. Starting work on draft three has been a very intimidating journey. I am making bigger changes on this book then I ever have and wondering if I’ve been wasting my time all these years with it. But that being said I’m really excited for everything I have planned, there will be two added POVs, quite a bit of plot shifting and slight reworking of my MC. I won’t lie I’ve been a bit intimidated to really get into the main story now that the prologue is complete but I hope I know better than to let that stop me.
And I wish I had updates for my fantasy series Forever Lost, but unfortunately that project has been on the sidelines for the past few months, right now my plan is to get into outlining it (because I do finally have met of the owl building done) once I’m a bit deeper into draft three of Folklore because as much as I’ve had to stop and revise the world of forever Lost it still has a bit of the new shiny idea to it, and I refuse to allow Folklore to lie on the wayside any longer.
Anyways, that’s it for me, I hope you have a lovely October, I personally will be taking a trip to Niagara Falls and reading Jane Austin♡
